Botulinum toxin is a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Popularly known as botox, it is used for various cosmetic and medical procedures. The mechanism of action for botulinum toxin-A is really quite simple.
It is injected into the facial muscles and, within a few hours, it attaches itself to the nerve endings of the motor muscles, thereby affecting nerve signal transmission to these muscles. In cosmetic applications, a botox injection, consisting of a small dose of botulinum toxin, can be used to prevent the development of wrinkles by paralyzing facial muscles.
Training is the Key
While most individuals associate their dentist with teeth – dentists are also experts of the head, face and neck. Dentists have all the requisite training to offer these injections in a safe atmosphere and, because they are bona fide medical professionals, this is not outside the scope of their expertise by any stretch of the imagination.
While botox treatment in Europe is only just gaining momentum, approximately 7% to 8% of dentists in North America provide botox treatment to their patients for cosmetic reasons, and this number is growing.
