What Are Dental Lasers and How it can be used for Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry?

Dentistry has evolved dramatically over the last 30 years. Lasers are evolved and became an important treatment tool for dentists.  A tremendous need for a more preventative approach to dental treatment. Lasers come in two distinct categories – hard tissue and soft tissue lasers,

  • Hard tissue lasers remove tooth structure, white filling and bone, used also for implant and jaw surgery operations.
  • Soft tissue lasers remove gum and surrounding tissue (tongue, lips and cheek).

Lasers work by light energy that is converted to heat when it strikes an absorptive material. Multiple types of lasers exist because each emits a unique light wave that is best absorbed in a particular material. So the first question you should ask any potential laser dentist is, “What kind of laser do you use?”

If you have gum disease, a soft tissue laser would be appropriate. In soft tissue the diseased tissue is removed while sealing blood and nerve endings leaving cut tissue bloodless and non-tender. This usually eliminates the need for stitches and a return visit.

The hard tissue laser is effective if you have tooth decay, old white fillings that need replacement, eroded areas from tooth brushing and/or grinding your teeth, dental implant sugeries and used for many other complicated operatios.

The precise pinpoint size of the laser light beam eases the removal of tooth or gum tissue. Quick pulses of light energy remove tooth structure or white fillings. The energy is too quick to stimulate the nerves and cause pain. Little or no anesthesia is required for laser treatment, but each patients pain threshold is different. In one visit, several fillings can be done in varying locations, without numbing multiple regions.

What are the benefits of using dental lasers?

There are several advantages. Dentists may not need to use a drill or administer anesthesia in some procedures,  allowing the patient to enjoy a more relaxed dental experience. Laser procedures can be more precise. Also, lasers can reduce symptoms and healing times associated with traditional therapies; reduce the amount of bacteria in both diseased gum tissue and in tooth cavities; and control bleeding during surgery.

Are dental lasers safe?

If the dental laser is used according to accepted practices by a trained practitioner, then it is at least as safe as other dental instruments. However, just as you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun, when your dentist performs a laser procedure, youwill be asked to wear special eyeglasses to protect your eyes from the laser.

In summary, lasers can be used for a multitude of procedures, ranging from gum sculpting for cosmetic purposes, to removing diseased tissue. Dentart Implant & Aesthetic Dentistry Clinic in Istanbul Turkey is committed to using only the latest technology, including laser dentistry.
